A Weekend Of Brunching in Vancouver, BC

Hello from beautiful (and not currently raining!) Vancouver! As usual it has been far too long since I’ve written anything on here, however since we are now socially distancing due to the ongoing Covid19 pandemic, I have lots of time to create new content. I am hoping to post a bit more frequently as this unfolds, but I’m not sure my hourly walks around my living room or my daily attempts at learning French will make for illuminating reading…

Since this blog is meant to be about food and drink, and more specifically brunch, I figured what better place to re-start writing than about last weekends back-to-back brunching adventure.

On Friday night we hosted my friends from work for a night of pizza and beer. On reflection, given the current circumstances, it probably wasn’t the wisest idea to fill our 1 bedroom apartment with 10 people, but I think the amount of alcohol we got through probably killed any germs floating around!

What we woke up to on Saturday morning!

On Saturday, I headed out on the Canada line to meet an old work colleague, Allison and her daughter Lizzy whilst Rich slept off his very real hangover.

We headed to a beautiful restaurant on Cambie Street called “Milestones“. They have locations all around BC and are not just a purely brunch place, so I will definitely be taking Rich for date night once coronavirus isolation is over.

Of course, because I could never bring myself to order from the non-brunch menu, I ordered the “Avocado Toast” for $15 (plus tax, plus tip like pretty much everywhere in Canada) and I made my way through three mimosas during my visit (plus a green tea at the end of my meal for health…).  Allison decided against the brunch menu and ordered the “Baja Fish Tacos” ($16), which were very sizeable and reportedly delicious.

After almost three hours of catching up and feeling very stuffed, I decided to take a walk in the sunshine over the Cambie Street bridge to one of my favourite places in the city, the central branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Although it’s still a bit chilly in Vancouver, walking into the city reminded me how lucky I feel to live in such a beautiful city.

On Sunday morning we had a lazy start and then headed over to Kitsilano to meet Rich’s workmate Ian. We haven’t spent a great amount of time in Kits, so we were very much looking forward to a day of exploring (and of course eating and drinking!)

After taking a train and a bus, we met Ian who was already in the queue at Jam Cafe. Jam is super popular and there is pretty much always a queue from opening until their last entry at 3pm so it was good to already have a spot, but we did feel a little bit awkward about effectively queue jumping. Luckily no-one around us seemed to notice or care.

After half an hour or so we were seated and it was time for mimosas all round. Ian and I went for double sized “Classic Mimosa” with orange juice (single $7, double $12), whilst Rich decided he’d try the “90s Retro Mimosa” which is “Prosecco with Malibu rum and pineapple” (single $7.50, double $13). He also went for the double and it’s fair to say that if I had ordered it, I would have fallen off my chair after half a glass!

For food, I tried the “Green Eggs and Ham” ($16) and Rich went for the “Chicken ‘N Waffles” ($18). We were pretty ravenous after not eating all morning and the wait in the queue so, very unusually for us, I only took a brief snap of my food and Rich didn’t take any photos of his! The food was very good, however I do find sometimes that brunch restaurants can tend to be a bit fancy for the sake of it, and I’m sure you’ll agree the slice of kiwi and orange didn’t really need to be on my plate…

We finished up our day with a very brief walk down to the beach to soak up the early Spring sun and three rounds each of “Deer and Beer” ($9.75) – a shot of Jagermeister and a can of Old Style Pilsner – at Local Kitsilano. I think it’s safe to say from the photos later in the day (which I will not be sharing!) that the second and third rounds were probably entirely unnecessary!

After a lovely drunken day out we headed home to search out some toilet paper, which was the first sign that our lives were going to be very different just a few days later…
