Western Australia is one of our favourite places in the world. We first landed in Perth as a couple in February 2016 and this is our third visit since then. We are exceptionally lucky that two-thirds of Richard’s immediate family have chosen to make a life here as it provides a cheap base from which we can explore more of Australia and South-East Asia.

When exploring WA outside of Perth, we have so far made it as far North as Shark Bay and as far South as Margaret River so we still have a lot of exploring left to do!

We last visited ‘Margs’ in November 2017 to celebrate Richard’s 32nd Birthday, but the Spring weather was not really on our side and so when we got a chance on this trip to head back down south, we jumped at the chance to (hopefully) see it in the sunshine. And to of course, eat lots of food and drink lots of famous Margaret River wine.
As we are on a budget visit to Perth, saving to move to Vancouver just three weeks today, we rented a self-catering apartment with Richard’s parents and tried to eat breakfast and some evening meals at home. On our last day, however, we decided to treat ourselves.
Our first stop was the ‘Cheeky Monkey Brewery‘ where we shared a tasting paddle of 4 beers and a cider and then took a stroll around the beautiful grounds taking in the various stunning Autumnal colours.
Next up was one of our favourite places in Margaret River – ‘The Berry Farm‘ – and we were not disappointed with our choice to share a Steak Sandwich and a bottle of Pear & Boysenberry wine. We were unaware of what a ‘boysenberry’ was prior to this visit, but we decided to be adventurous and were delighted with the results. According to Wikipedia: “The boysenberry is a cross among the European raspberry, European blackberry, American dewberry, and loganberry. It is a large 8.0-gram aggregate fruit, with large seeds and a deep maroon colour.” According to us, it made for a lovely sweet fruity fizzy wine that gave us a definite afternoon buzz and led us to behave like children in the onsite play park!

After a much needed afternoon nap to reduce the effects of the daytime drinking, our final stop of the day was to the beautiful ‘Cape Mentelle‘ Winery, where we had decided to treat Richard’s mum and dad (and ourselves!) to an outdoor cinema experience, complete with pre-movie charcuterie boards and a bottle of wine.
Eating and drinking in Margaret River has been one of the highlights of this trip. We feel like we could visit many more times and still find new and exciting places to eat and drink and we will definitely visit again in the future.
