Eating Our Way To Vancouver

I’m just going to throw it out there – I LOVE plane food.
Now it’s out there, I can’t take it back and to be honest I really don’t want to. I really do love plane food.
I’ve loved plane food since way back when I was still taking my first flights in the early 90s; way before trendy chefs created fancy menus designed to whet the appetite of people at 35,000 feet who have no idea what time of day it is, much less what meal they should be eating.

I guess part of the enjoyment comes from what the meal actually represents rather than the actual heavily spiced and seasoned (usually) chicken or pasta dish – side-note, once we had the “privilege” of eating one of these dishes on the ground, the heat from the spices nearly blew us across the airport! Much like the old theory that a drink in the air is worth three on the ground, they have to add a whole load of extra spices because our taste buds just don’t work the same way in the sky.
But anyway, the plane meal represents the excitement of a new adventure, the start of a whole new set of memories. Even if I’m on my return leg of a journey, those last few hours in the air and the in-flight meals let me hold on to that feeling for just a little bit longer before reality kicks in.
The eating part of our travels often starts before we board the plane. When we’re not travelling on a budget, we tend to book an airport lounge and eat and drink as much “free” stuff as we can.
For our journey to Vancouver we decided we shouldn’t waste precious pennies in a lounge since we are going to be surviving on one income for the foreseeable future, but we still decided to have a mini-treat by getting breakfast at Jamie’s.
After the excitement of the ‘Italian Job’ Omlette and Rich trying his first (and last) Bloody Mary, we boarded our pretty cramped first flight to Toronto. The in-flight food did not disappoint, however it wasn’t deemed pretty enough for me to take a photograph. I had tomato pasta with a celebratory white wine (tasted like vinegar), Rich had chicken and rice without alcohol for possibly the first time ever and later on we had mini calzones.
Despite feeling pretty full when we landed, we had a bit of time to kill between flights. We spent about an hour in immigration sorting out Richard’s work permit and then had to re-check our bags, but this still left us about three hours of hanging around time before our plane to Vancouver. So we did what we do best; eat and drink.

New Favourite Drink (we’ve managed to get through 23 cans of this in the 10 days since we arrived!)

Soon enough, it was time to board our second flight of the day, which sadly (and probably quite fortunately) did not have any food. A mere 23 hours after we left our home in England, we arrived in Vancouver ready to start a new adventure.
