The Weekend It Stopped Raining And Our First Easter In Vancouver

I’m not sure if my previous posts have covered this, but it rains A LOT in Vancouver. Even coming from the UK, which is definitely not short of its fair share of rain, we were surprised as to how much it rained during our first week in Canada.

We spent our first weekend dodging the rain in pubs and restaurants so when the sunshine arrived, we were determined to make the most of it. Our second weekend was spent walking round the city, visiting a cannabis festival and yet more eating and drinking.

After our trip to IKEA on Good Friday, we left the house on Easter Saturday and headed to enjoy downtown Vancouver in the sunshine. When we visited Vancouver in August 2018, there were over 600 wildfires burning across British Columbia leaving a haze across the city and meaning we had yet to see the beautiful mountainous landscape that makes this part of the world so special.

So we were super excited to finally get to see it this time round. The day was stunning with blue skies all around.

After soaking up the beauty of the harbour, we walked back through the city to English Bay Beach. One of the best things that we have discovered about Vancouver so far, is that most bars have ‘Happy Hour’ and that it frequently lasts much longer than an hour.

At the beachside Cactus Club Cafe happy hour is daily from 3-6pm and 9pm-close. That day, they were offering all of their happy hour drinks all day so we took advantage.

Feeling a little merry, we headed on to Sunset Beach for the Annual 4/20 Protest Festival. The Cannabis Act came into force in Canada in October 2018, legalising the use of Cannabis for many citizens. The 4/20 festival first took place in 1995 and has steadily grown over the years. The festival this year was expected to draw crowds of 100,000 people and although I had no interest in partaking myself, I was interested in seeing a gathering that large. Plus sunset beach is truly beautiful.

After seeing some pretty interesting sites and when the smell got too much for me, we made our way to our final destination of the day for another Happy “Hour” (Daily 2-5pm & 9pm-close) at the Craft Beer Market. On an impulse Rich ordered us a happy hour Fish Taco and Brisket Slider to share ($4 each), which we washed down with a couple of Rotating Handles ($5 each).

After a drunken Easter Saturday, we woke up on Easter Sunday with delicate heads but also to the news that the Easter Bunny had found us. After doing our weekly shop, we snuggled in for a duvet day (despite the sun, it was still far too cold for the outside world), a Marvel Movie Marathon and gorging on all the chocolate.
