Today is officially our one year travel-versary. Exactly one year ago today we boarded a plane to New York completely unaware of what would happen next.
To celebrate the occasion I have compiled a list of things we didn’t know this time last year.
We didn’t know…
…that we would travel to four countries across three continents.
…that we would spend almost a month living in a van.
…that we would have so many different jobs and that Rich would become a pro at accounts payable.
…that (not including the van) we would have 11 different addresses across four major Australian cities.
…that Kelly wouldn’t drive for the entire year.
…that Rich would grow a beard and that we both now can’t imagine him without it.
…that we would collect souvenir pins from all the places we’ve visited and that we have no idea what to do with them.
…that we would meet so many people and form lifelong friendships.
…that there are so many Germans travelling in Australia.
…that we would meet my sister in Thailand.
…that there are penguins in Melbourne.
…that we would consider 20 degrees jeans and jumper weather.
…that Kelly would spend a week in shopping centres around the Brisbane suburbs trying (and failing miserably) to sell Hello Fresh boxes.
…that Australian TV is terrible, but that we’d fall in love with Masterchef Australia and The Bachelor/Bachelorette.
…that weather forecasts in Australia mostly tell you about the weather that you’ve already experienced that day and very little about the days ahead.
…that we would become heavily reliant on public transport and that it was much easier than we could ever imagine.
…that we would be so bad at updating the blog.
…that we would see such a vast array of wildlife and that we’d be attacked by a snake.
…that we love travel as much as we do and that we can’t wait to do more of it.
…that we would be returning to the UK in just 40 sleeps!
I’m sure there are hundreds of other things that we’ve learned along the way, but it’s late and my brain isn’t working. Most importantly, we didn’t know how amazing our journey would be and how it was easily the best decision we’ve ever made.
