Day 21: Mallacoota to Orbost to Lakes Entrance to Bairnsdale
Kilometres travelled – 242
Where we stayed – Bairnsdale Riverside Holiday Park
Highlights – woke up not dead! Took a tourist drive through another beautiful area – the Snowy River estuary, took in more stunning views at Lakes Entrance, shared our camp kitchen with all the traveller cliches we could find – I’m talking ponchos, top knots, hareem pants and thousands of wristbands.
Day 22: Bairnsdale to Sale to Port Albert
Kilometres travelled – 146
Where we stayed – Port Albert Car Park (free)
Highlights – wetlands boardwalk in Sale, finished Harry Potter book 1 (Rich concluded that the books are indeed much better than the films), prosecco and beer for lunch at Port Albert (and the small drama when my card declined several times and it looked like we were too poor to pay, cue me walking up and down the street waving my phone around the air on my tiptoes trying to get enough signal to login to my online banking and transfer some money to Rich), walked around the harbour, drank $6 cider (cheap for Australia) at the local pub and had a two-person party in our van drinking wine and reminiscing about our trip.

Day 23: Port Albert to Wilsons Promontory National Park to Inverloch
Kilometres travelled – 182
Where we stayed – Inverloch Foreshore Camping Reserve (paid)
Highlights – explored Wilsons Prom (the most southerly tip on Australian mainland), went on a lovely nature walk that nearly finished us off (described as ‘moderate’ which in Aus means suitable for most walkers with an average level of fitness, we would like to rename it as ‘the bloody hard walk up and down a lot of hills with no decent grip for Kelly’s thongs’) and Rich found more squeaky sand. My sister delightfully described Rich as a ‘terrorist’ on FaceTime due to his travelling beard.

Day 24: Inverloch to Phillip Island
Kilometres travelled – 54
Where we stayed – Beach Park Tourist Caravan Park (paid)
Highlights – visited the Phillip Island Little Penguins, easily one of our favourite moments of our entire trip and the perfect way to end our East Coast adventure.

Day 25: Phillip Island to Melbourne
Kilometres travelled – 142
Where we stayed – in our awesome friends spare room (free of course and became our home for the next two weeks).
Highlights – reuniting with Kyle and meeting Naomi, did a truckload (or Campervan load I guess!) of laundry, had a proper home cooked meal and slept in a real bed again.
On day 26 we returned our lovely Vader to the Spaceships people. This involved driving to a self car wash about 10 minutes away, spending $12 to use lots of fancy settings on the machine to wash and vac the car (and ourselves unfortunately) and then driving to Williamstown (which I described in my journal as appearing to be in the arse end of nowhere) to sit in a tiny boiling hot office for about 20 minutes until a lady with a clipboard nodded at us and told us we were free to go.
After almost a month on road, it was time to settle into life in Melbourne…
